Honors Program

Indiana’s Definition of High Ability:
A high ability student is one who performs at or shows the potential for an outstanding level of accomplishment in at least one domain when compared to others of the same age, experience, or environment, and is characterized by exceptional gifts, talents or motivation.

Categories of Eligibility:

MCS identifies students as high ability or the potential to be high achieving in the following areas:

  • Math
  • English/Language Arts
  • General Intellectual - both Math and E/LA

Honors Curriculum:
Muncie Community School's Honors Curriculum goes beyond the grade level standard and is enriched and advanced.  Students are not given more work, but they are provided more rigorous work that challenges them to analyze, evaluate, and synthesize information.

The English/language arts curriculum is expanded with the Indiana Department of Education High Ability Units of Study for each grade level.

Honors math students can take Algebra I as an 8th grader for high school credit.

Spanish I is offered to 8th graders for high school credit as well as Preparing for College and Careers.

Honors band and choir are offered for 7th and 8th graders who excel in m
